BRIEF INTRODUCTION 

Prof. Dagher received his Doctorate degree in structural engineering from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1985.   He also holds two Masters Degrees in Structural Engineering and in Engineering Mechanics. He is Professor of Civil/Structural Engineering at the University of Maine, and Director of the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center.   The objective of the NSF-funded Center is to develop high-performance FRP-wood hybrid materials for construction and bridge applications. The University of Maine has constructed a 30,000-ft2 research facility to house the Center.  The facility is able to manufacture composite materials prototypes, engineered wood composites prototypes, and test full-scale bridges up to 100 ft long, 50 ft wide and buildings up to 25 ft high.  

 Dr. Dagher has received numerous awards for his work, including the Distinguished Maine Professor Award, the highest award to a faculty at the University of Maine.  Dr. Dagher has written over 100 technical publications, and chairs national technical committees in the bridge and FRP reinforcement areas.  He has designed and analyzed and maintained numerous bridges, fourteen of which are in Maine.  He has been a consultant to the Maine Department of Transportation for 12 years and has taught courses to their bridge engineers.   He has conducted many technical projects for the Federal Highway Administration, and has served on many national bridge technical panels.   He has helped develop design criteria for bridges that are now in place in the State of Maine.   He is frequently called upon nationally and internationally to consult on matters of bridge design.  He has consulted on numerous bridge projects some with lengths exceeding 450 ft.  Some of Dr. Dagher's bridge projects may be viewed on the following web site address: www.aewc.umaine.edu.

Dr. Dagher has developed, designed, tested and monitored fourteen full-scale demonstration bridges using wood and wood-FRP composite hybrids.  Dr. Dagher has three patents pending on FRP technology for bridges.

NSF-FUNDED CENTER FOR ADVANCED ENGINEERED
WOOD COMPOSITES

     In the mid-19th Century, reinforcing concrete with steel significantly changed building and bridge construction throughout the world.  As the 20th Century ends, many of the factors that contributed to the success of reinforced concrete are found in combining wood with Fiber Reinforced Polymers (FRPs).   In 1996, Dr. Dagher led a research team that received $8 million from the National Science Foundation, the State government, the US Department of Commerce and industry to create the Advanced Engineered Wood Composites Center in Maine. 

     The Advanced Wood Composites Center is developing the underlying science and engineering principles that will allow FRP-Wood hybrid materials to advance wood construction industry.    

     As in the development of reinforced and prestressed concrete, basic research is being conducted to unlock the full potential of a wide variety of AEWC structural members, e.g., beams, columns, panels and connections.  AEWC are unique in that two different materials, FRP and wood, are used together; thus the principles governing the short- and long-term structural behavior differ in many ways from those involving only one of the two materials.  The Center for Advanced Wood Composites in Construction, funded by NSF, the US Department of Commerce, and the US composites and wood industries, has the following objectives: 

  • developing a new class of FRP reinforcing materials that are compatible
    with wood, particularly its hygro-expansion and visco-elastic
    properties;

  • developing and maintaining over time the interface between the two
    materials needed to ensure full composite action; 

  • developing a basic understanding of the short- and long-term
    behavior of AEWC structural elements including performance
    over the full range of loading, ultimate strength, ductility, creep,
    fatigue and moisture/temperature/UV cycling.
