Dr. M. Peterson is an Associate Professor and the Graduate Coordinator for Mechanical Engineering at University of Maine. He was previously at Colorado State University where he was an Assistant Professor and held the Rockwell-Anderson Professorship for the College of Engineering. He received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Specialty from General Motors Institute in Flint, Michigan in 1985 and his M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Theoretical and Applied Mechanics from Northwestern University in Evanston, IL in 1987 and 1993 respectively.
Dr. Peterson worked at the spring and forge plant of Buick Motor Division as a Manufacturing Engineer prior to graduate work in mechanics. Since then he has worked in several areas of applied wave propagation. He worked in structural acoustics analysis at Electric Boat Division of General Dynamics, during 1987 and 1988, modeling the high frequency performance of resilient mounts and acoustic control of shipboard components. His M.S. thesis work consisted of modeling of elastic scattering from a branched crack and performing ultrasonic experiments to support the results. Returning to the area of non-destructive testing from Electric Boat for his Ph.D. research, Dr. Peterson worked in the application of guided waves as an in situ process monitoring method for processing of ceramics. He did related work in guided waves application for inspection of large structures while working as a Research Associate at the Center for Quality Engineering at Northwestern University. Dr. Peterson's current areas of research include modeling of guided waves and the integration of signal processing and modeling for high temperature material characterization. He is also active in areas of biological modeling and testing related to biological systems. His research efforts have resulted in 34 journal articles and more than 60 conference papers. He is also a frequent invited speaker for groups working to improve the safety of racetrack surfaces for Thoroughbred and Quarter Horse racing as well as dog racing. He is a member of American Society for Mechanical Engineers, Society for Experimental Mechanics, Acoustical Society of America. He is currently Vice-Chair of the Biological Materials and Systems Technical Division of the Society for Experimental Mechanics, secretary of the Dynamic Response of Materials Technical Committee of the Applied Mechanics Division of ASME and executive committee member of the Non-Destructive Testing Division of ASME. He is a member of a number of honorary societies including Tau Beta Pi and Pi Tau Sigma and has several awards at the University of Maine and Colorado State University as well as the Walter P. Murphy and Cabell Fellowship for 3 years at Northwestern University, the Olin Prize Fellowship and University Fellowship at Yale University, and a General Motors Fellowship for Graduate Studies.
